Groovy Lights BB Theme

Groovy Lights

Okay, first I have to say that I feel that this is the best Blackberry theme that I’ve made to date. I was even somewhat apprehensive of releasing it towards the end, as I had grown seriously attached to it and was afraid of it leaving the nest, lol. This theme has taken me nearly two months to design, complete and prefect. But nonetheless, here we (finally) have Groovy Lights, a funky and futuristic theme available in the Bottom Zen, Blank Homescreen, Icon, “L”, Plus and List styles for $5.55 each exclusively through the Shoppe.

Groovy Lights is overflowing with custom graphics that have been ‘hand drawn’ and/or designed by me via the aid of my graphic tablet (and a lot of patience). The icons were drawn and designed from scratch. This was of course a strenuous task to partake in, but I am more than satisfied with the end results. The icons are influenced by those featured in the Precision themes included with the Bold/OS 4.6+. While I like the general concept of the “Bold” icons, I do not consider Groovy Lights to be just another “Bold theme” as I infused my own flair and customizations into the icons and graphics featured throughout.

The icons featured in the Bottom Zen/Plus and “L” home screens are animated, wherein they spring from the bottom and from the left/bottom, respectfully. In addition to the application icons, this theme also features matching dialog & phone icons and (my personal favorite) a matching animated hourglass. The dialog boxes and menus are rendered in such a way that emulates sheets of industrial metal, a neat effect that looks really nice on screen. Also featured in Groovy Lights are custom battery, signal and volume meters. As mentioned in my preview post for this theme, its namesake derives from the featured wallpaper used in GL; this was something I designed a few months ago.

Now, my primary goal when designing Groovy Lights was to make it as ‘wallpaper friendly’ as possible. I’ve tested this theme with nearly 300 wallpapers, from girly to creepy to landscapes to abstract, etc. Aiding in my goal in making GL wallpaper friendly, I have also made it so whenever you change the home screen wallpaper, this change is reflected in the lock screen as well—something you don’t commonly see in custom themes.

UPDATE 10/28/08: Groovy Lights v1.1 is now available. Key new features include user customizable home screen icons (for the Bottom Zen, “L”, List and Plus styles) and user customizable message list fonts, and more! See this post for details.
